the-ultimate-game-of-thrones-malta-locations

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past several years, ‘Game of Thrones’ is one of the biggest shows on TV. Its epic scale, intense battles, complex characters, and stunning locations have captivated audiences worldwide.

Listen, I totally understand that ‘Game of Thrones’ isn’t for everyone – some find its violence and rampant sex disturbing – I, like many, am drawn to its immersive world. And for fans like me, one of the most attractive features is its use of real-world locations. That said, for those who prefer a more subtle approach, I put together a detailed 3 Days Malta Itinerary. Although it will still include some of the Game of Thrones Malta filming locations, GoT is not the focus.

Game of Thrones’ was filmed in several countries, including Spain, Morocco, Ireland, Iceland, Croatia, and, of course, Malta. I’m almost ashamed to admit that Malta wasn’t high on my travel list until I saw it featured in Season 1! Since then, I’ve been eager to explore the exact spots where some of the series’ most memorable scenes were filmed.

This article will guide you through the incredible Game of Thrones Malta locations, allowing you to step into the world of Westeros. So cue the G.O.T. opening theme music.

Gozo, Maltese Island

The Azure Window (Now Collapsed) – Daenerys And Khal-Drogo Wedding

One of the most iconic Game of Thrones Malta locations is the island of Gozo, specifically the now-collapsed Azure Window. Gozo is a beautiful island in the Mediterranean Sea, part of the Maltese archipelago.

Sadly, due to severe weather, the Azure Window, a natural limestone arch, collapsed into the sea on March 8, 2017. This 28-meter-tall arch served as the backdrop for the epic wedding scene between Daenerys Targaryen and Khal Drogo.

During filming, the Azure Window was transformed using a mesh covered in sand to create a desert-like setting

Valletta, Malta

Valletta is the capital city of Malta and home to a few of the locations used in Game Of Thrones.

The location has also been used for several other TV shows as well as popular movies like Gladiators, Troy and Assassin’s Creed. When the site is not in use for filming, it is open for tourists to visit. You can hire a “dghajsa” (modernized water taxi), to travel through the city in style.

Fort Ricasoli – The King’s Gate

Valletta’s 17th-century Fort Ricasoli served as the imposing King’s Gate, the entrance to the Red Keep, in ‘Game of Thrones’. You might remember it as the gate the Starks rode through the first time they arrived at the Red Keep. Unfortunately, the stag’s head over the gate in the show was added digitally, so it doesn’t exist in real life. This is also the gate that Arya was trying to get through to get back into the Red Keep when the guards think she’s a beggar boy.

Beyond its ‘Game of Thrones’ fame, Fort Ricasoli is a formidable stronghold. Built in the 17th century, this sprawling fortification is known for its massive bastions and intricate network of underground tunnels, testaments to its strategic importance throughout Malta’s history.

Visiting Fort Ricasoli offers a unique glimpse into both Maltese history and the world of Westeros. Although public access is sometimes limited due to ongoing restoration, its imposing facade can be admired from various vantage points around the Grand Harbour. Check local guides for the latest visiting information.

Fort St. Angelo: Inside the Red Keep’s Dungeons

Sitting on a promontory in the heart of the Grand Harbour, Fort St. Angelo is a formidable stronghold with a rich history, serving as the chilling backdrop for the Red Keep’s dungeons in ‘Game of Thrones’. Originally built in the 13th century and significantly expanded by the Knights of St. John, Fort St. Angelo boasts impressive fortifications, including towering bastions, intricate passageways, and even underground chambers that hint at its strategic importance back in the day.

In ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 1, Fort St. Angelo’s dungeons stood in for the Red Keep’s prison cells. Scenes such as Ned Stark’s imprisonment were filmed here, highlighting the fort’s imposing and somber ambiance. While some set dressing was added for the show, the fort’s overall structure remains authentic, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in both the fictional world of Westeros and the real history of Malta.

Today, Fort St. Angelo is a popular tourist attraction, offering breathtaking views of Valletta and the Grand Harbour. Visitors can explore its various chambers and learn about its fascinating history. Check the Heritage Malta website for the most up-to-date information on opening hours and ticket information.

Eagle Street: Exploring a Street in King’s Landing

What I love most about Malta is how each of its buildings and churches look like they were built in a sand box! The cities are so medieval it’s very easy to step into the bustling world of King’s Landing with a visit to Valletta’s Eagle Street, a location that provided the backdrop for various street scenes in ‘Game of Thrones’.

Valletta, Malta’s capital city, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, celebrated for its 16th-century Baroque architecture. Its grid-like street plan and sand-stone buildings, including those on Eagle Street, offer a glimpse into the city’s rich history.

While largely unchanged, some minor set dressing might have been added for filming. However, the street retains its historic character, allowing visitors to easily imagine themselves transported to Westeros. Eagle Street is easily accessible on foot while exploring Valletta

Fort Manoel – The Great Sept of Baelor

Located on Manoel Island in Marsamxett Harbour, Fort Manoel is a star-shaped fortress with a somber connection to ‘Game of Thrones’ – it served as the Great Sept of Baelor.

Built in the 18th century by the Knights of St. John, Fort Manoel is known for its impressive bastions and symmetrical design, which could be considered a testament to the military architecture of the period.

In ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 1, Fort Manoel was used to depict the Great Sept of Baelor, the grand sept in King’s Landing. It was the site of one of the show’s most shocking scenes: Ned Stark’s execution. The fort’s imposing structure lent a sense of gravity to these pivotal moments.

While some modifications were made for filming, the fort’s main structure remains recognizable to visitors. In fact, since my Airbnb was in Sliema, I needed to take a ferry over to Valletta, which took me right past this fort! It’s so impressive!!!

Mdina, Malta

In close competition with the Azure Window, one of my absolute favourite Game of Thrones locations in Malta is Mdina. Before Valletta, it was the original capital of Malta, and it’s the most beautiful location. Mdina is sometimes called the Silent City, and with its medieval walls, plazas, sandy stone buildings, and horse-pulled carriages are sure to awaken memories of King’s Landing.

This is probably because it was used as King’s Landing in season one before the Lannister’s packed up and sailed over to Croatia’s Dubrovnik and set up shop for season two.

Mdina Gate: Stepping Through the Gates of King’s Landing

The ancient walled city of Mdina offers a journey back in time, and its impressive main gate served as the grand entrance to King’s Landing in ‘Game of Thrones’. In real life, the Mdina Gate is the main gate into the fortified city of Mdina. In Game of Thrones, it’s the gate into King’s Landing that Catelyn arrives through before going to Littlefinger’s brothel in Season 1. It’s also where Ned and Catelyn share a memorable goodbye kiss that we (and they!) didn’t know would be their last.

Mdina Gate is an incredible example of Baroque architecture, with its stone structure and ornate details. The city itself has a rich history, dating back thousands of years, and was once the capital of Malta

Again, minor set dressing might have been added for filming, but the gate remains largely unchanged, allowing visitors to experience its historical significance and ‘Game of Thrones’ connection. Mdina Gate is the main entrance to Mdina and is easily accessible on foot. Visitors can explore the city’s narrow streets, historic buildings, and stunning views. Guided tours offer deeper insights into Mdina’s history and its connection to the show.

Mesquita Square: Inside Littlefinger’s Realm

Mesquita Square served as the exterior for Littlefinger’s infamous brothel. Mesquita Square is a charming square nestled within the ancient walls of Mdina, often called the ‘Silent City.’ Its historic buildings and traditional Maltese architecture create a captivating vibe, offering a glimpse into the city’s past.

In ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 1, Mesquita Square provided the backdrop for exterior shots of Littlefinger’s brothel, a key hub for information gathering, political scheming, and dangerous alliances. Scenes that showcased Littlefinger’s influence and manipulation were often set against this square’s evocative setting.

While the brothel’s interior was a set, the square’s exterior remains largely unchanged, allowing visitors to walk in the footsteps of characters like Ned Stark and Littlefinger and imagine the power plays that unfolded here.

OTHER GAME OF THRONES LOCATIONS IN MALTA

Of course, the show was filmed in lots of different locations across Malta, not just in Valletta and Mdina. Here’s a list of some standout spots to visit to complete your fangirl/boy travel dreams:

St. Dominic’s Priory: Tranquil Gardens of the Red Keep

Time to escape the hustle and bustle of King’s Landing and visit St. Dominic’s Priory in Rabat, a serene location that served as the Gardens of the Red Keep in ‘Game of Thrones’. St. Dominic’s Priory is a historic Dominican monastery in Rabat, Malta, known for its peaceful courtyards and traditional Maltese architecture. Rabat itself is a town adjacent to Mdina, with its own rich history and cultural significance.

In ‘Game of Thrones,’ the priory’s gardens provided a tranquil setting for scenes set in the Red Keep’s gardens. Key conversations and moments of reflection took place here, away from the chaos of the court. For example, the time when Ned confronts Cersei about the actual father of her children, and she says the pivotal line “When you play the Game of Thrones, you live or you die.”

While the gardens might have been slightly altered for filming, the priory’s overall structure and atmosphere remain largely unchanged, allowing visitors to experience its peaceful ambiance.

Verdala Palace: Birth of the Dragon Queen, Daenerys

It was here within the opulent walls of Verdala Palace that viewers were first introduced to Daenerys Targaryen, the future ‘Mother of Dragons’, marking the beginning of her transformative journey. Verdala Palace, located in the serene Buskett Gardens, is a 16th-century palace which serves as an official residence of the President of Malta. Its grand architecture and lush surroundings offer a glimpse into Maltese nobility.

In ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 1, Verdala Palace stood in for Illyrio Mopatis’s luxurious mansion in Pentos. Key scenes that established Daenerys’s character and her initial circumstances, such as her wedding preparations and early interactions with Khal Drogo, were filmed here. While some interior scenes were likely filmed on set, the palace’s exterior remains largely recognizable from its appearance in the show

San Anton Palace: Within the Walls of the Red Keep

Step away from the bustling streets of King’s Landing and into the elegant setting of San Anton Palace, another Maltese location that lent its grandeur to the Red Keep in ‘Game of Thrones’.

San Anton Palace, located in Attard, is the official residence of the President of Malta. It’s renowned for its beautiful gardens, which are open to the public, and its impressive architecture, reflecting Malta’s rich history.

In ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 1, San Anton Palace and its gardens were used for various scenes set within the Red Keep, including the horribly memorable scene when Joffrey brings Sansa up to see her father’s head on a pike.

While some minor set dressing might have been added for filming, the palace and gardens remain largely unchanged, allowing visitors to experience their historical charm. San Anton Palace’s gardens are a popular attraction in Attard. Visitors can stroll through the gardens and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

Mtarhleb Valley: A Dothraki Farewell

Mtarhleb Valley is the Maltese location that served as the setting for Khal Drogo’s funeral pyre in ‘Game of Thrones’. Its rugged cliffs and sweeping vistas offer a glimpse into Malta’s untamed beauty, and the valley’s dramatic scenery provided a powerful backdrop for one of the show’s most pivotal scenes: Daenerys Targaryen’s emergence from the cinders with her newborn dragons.

While the valley’s natural features remain largely unchanged, visitors can connect with the raw emotion of this ‘Game of Thrones’ scene and appreciate Malta’s stunning scenery.

Manikata: The Village the Dothraki Pillage

Manikata, a Maltese village that served as the setting for a brutal scene in ‘Game of Thrones’. Manikata is a small, rural village in Malta, known for its traditional Maltese character and peaceful atmosphere. It offers a glimpse into a quieter side of Maltese life.

In ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 1, Manikata was used to depict a village that was pillaged by the Dothraki. The village’s rustic setting and traditional buildings lent authenticity to the scene, highlighting the Dothraki’s ruthless nature.

While the village was likely altered for filming to depict the aftermath of the attack, its overall character remains largely unchanged. Other than that, there is not much more to see in this location. In fact, it’s quite a trek to even get there, so this filming location is reserved for the die-hard fans.
