Rovinj Itinerary: Best Things To Do In Rovinj (Perfect Day Trip From Pula)
Okay, full disclosure: My day trip to Rovinj thus my Rovinj itinerary, may or may not have been inspired by the movie “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” (2021), an action-comedy starring Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, and Salma Hayek. Just saying.
Ahem, perched on a picturesque peninsula along the Istrian coast, Rovinj boasts a stunning church, sitting at the highest point of the hill, with its steeple towering above the whole town. With its colourful houses cascading down from the church to the azure Adriatic, it’s often called the “Croatian Santorini” – and for good reason.
I specifically remember meandering through the narrow cobblestone streets and finding that at times, every side street led to the sea, where clothes on clothing lines swayed in the gentle breeze between the old buildings, with the sea in the background.
Easily accessible as a day trip from Pula, Rovinj offers a delightful blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, making it an unforgettable destination. This Rovinj itinerary will guide you through the best things to do, from exploring historic landmarks and soaking up the vibrant atmosphere to indulging in delicious Istrian cuisine and embarking on island adventures.
A Brief History of Rovinj
- Rovinj’s story is etched in ancient stones, whispering tales of bygone eras. Its origins trace back to the Illyrians, who established a settlement known as Ruigno around the 3rd century BC. The Romans later arrived, calling it Arupinium and developing it into a thriving port.
- However, it was the Venetians who truly shaped Rovinj’s identity. Their influence, spanning over five centuries, is evident in the charming architecture and vibrant cultural heritage. Like most of the cities and towns along the Adriatic, Rovinj thrived as a fishing port under Venetian rule.
- Today, Rovinj—and, let’s be honest, the entire Croatian coast—has captivated travellers worldwide with its beauty and authentic charm.
Getting to Rovinj
Since I was using Pula as a base of operations, I looked into the bus schedule and price for the trip to Rovinj. If I remember correctly, since the bus ride was only 40 minutes or so, I opted for the later 11:00-ish bus, which gave me time to grab a coffee and people-watch in Pula before leaving.
From Pula
- Bus: The most convenient way to reach Rovinj from Pula is by bus. The journey takes approximately 40 minutes and costs around €4-€5. Buses depart regularly from Pula’s main bus station. During my trip, the bus made a brief stop in the charming town of Bale. It was a delightful glimpse into Istrian life, with its picturesque stone houses, narrow streets, and a palpable sense of history.
From Zagreb
- Direct Bus: You can also travel directly to Rovinj from other cities in Istria and Croatia, including Zagreb. The journey from Zagreb takes around 4-5 hours and costs approximately €25-€35.
- Scenic Drive: If you have a car, consider a scenic drive along the Istrian coast. The journey offers stunning views of the Adriatic Sea and charming coastal towns.

Morning: A Rovinj Awakening
- From Bus Stop to Drone Views: From the bus stop, head down Carera ul., a charming cobblestone pedestrian street lined with shops and cafes. As you stroll along, you’ll notice the Chiesa di San Carlo, a beautiful church with a distinctive Baroque facade.
- However, I was eager to capture an aerial shot of the historic centre, with the church steeple piercing the sky. So, I set off on a quest to find the perfect drone launch spot. This led me along the picturesque waterfront, where colourful fishing boats bobbed gently in the harbour, the sounds of seagulls filled the air, and the scent of the salty air filled my lungs. Nothing says fresh seafood like the sight of locals mending fishing nets.
- Photo Point Delfin: My search led me to a hidden gem: a small pier called “Photo Point Delfin.” According to Google Maps, this spot is a designated tourist attraction for flying drones, and it offered the perfect vantage point to capture breathtaking aerial shots of Rovinj’s Old Town, with the church steeple as a magnificent centrepiece. (Include your drone photo here.) If you’re a photography enthusiast or simply want to capture Instagram-worthy shots, this hidden gem is a must-visit. It’s about a 7-minute walk from the bus station.
- Kip dječaka s ribom: After capturing those stunning aerial perspectives, I returned to the main square, marked by the charming statue of a boy with a fish, known as “Kip dječaka s ribom.”
- Balbi’s Archway: From the main square, head towards the Old Town, passing through Balbi’s Arch, a 17th-century gateway that marks the entrance to this historic district. This ornate archway, with its intricate carvings and Latin inscription, is a reminder of Rovinj’s Venetian heritage. Pause to admire the details: the sculpted heads, the Venetian lion, and the inscription commemorating the Venetian Republic.
- Market Buzz: Before heading up to the church, take a detour to experience the vibrant energy of Rovinj’s market. Here, you’ll find a colourful array of stalls overflowing with fresh produce, local delicacies, handcrafted souvenirs, and textiles. Engage with friendly vendors, sample regional specialties like Istrian olive oil and honey, and perhaps find a unique treasure to take home.
- St. Euphemia’s Ascent: Make your way up the hill to the magnificent Church of St. Euphemia, a Baroque masterpiece that dominates the Rovinj skyline. Step inside to admire the ornate interior, with its gilded altars, intricate frescoes, and the sarcophagus of St. Euphemia herself. Then, climb the bell tower for breathtaking panoramic views of the town, the harbour, and the glistening Adriatic.
- Church Surroundings: After visiting the church, take some time to explore its surroundings. You’ll find a charming lighthouse (Svjetionik/Lanterna) with its distinctive red and white stripes, offering more stunning views of the coastline. Nearby, you’ll also encounter the imposing structure of a former bunker, a relic of World War II, adding a touch of history to the landscape. And don’t forget to treat yourself to a refreshing ice cream from one of the vendors near the church – the perfect way to cool down on a warm day.
Afternoon: Art, Atmosphere, and Island Escapes
- Grisia Street: If you’ve managed to not get completely turned around and lost in the maze of cobblestone roads (which is easier said than done!), make your way over to Grisia Street, a charming, car-free lane lined with art galleries and studios. It’s a vibrant hub showcasing the works of local artists, offering a glimpse into Rovinj’s artistic soul. Browse the galleries, find a unique souvenir, or simply enjoy the colourful ambiance and the creative energy. You’ll find plenty of artistic renditions of my drone shot!
- Bistro Riva Refreshment: After enjoying all the art, take a break at Bistro Riva, a charming spot with a lively atmosphere. Like one does in Croatia, I grabbed a cold Ožujsko beer while soaking up the harbour views and people-watching. It’s the perfect place to relax, recharge, and charge your gear!
- Rovinj Heritage Museum: When you’ve had enough of people-watching, delve deeper into Rovinj’s rich history and cultural heritage at the Rovinj Heritage Museum (Muzej Grada Rovinja – Rovigno). Housed in a 17th-century Baroque palace, the museum showcases a fascinating collection of artifacts, artworks, and exhibits that tell the story of Rovinj’s past, from its ancient origins to its modern-day charm.
- Coastal Promenade: After immersing yourself in art, take a leisurely stroll along Ul. Sv. Križa and Šetalište braće Gnot, tracing the outer edges of the old town. The views of the shimmering Adriatic are mesmerizing, and the gentle sea breeze carries the scent of salt and pine. I loved watching the waves crash against the rocks below and observing the boats sailing in the distance.
- Harbourfront Delights: Descend towards the bustling harbourfront, where the sights, sounds, and smells of the Adriatic Sea come alive. Colourful fishing boats bob gently in the turquoise waters, their reflections dancing in the sunlight. The air is filled with the cries of seagulls, the chatter of locals, and the enticing aromas wafting from waterfront restaurants. Find a cafe with a view, sip a refreshing drink, and soak up the vibrant atmosphere. (Share your impressions of the harbourfront and any cafes or restaurants you recommend. Did you have a favourite spot to people-watch or enjoy the scenery?)
- Island Escape: As the afternoon sun begins to cast long shadows, embark on a boat trip to one of the nearby islands, like St. Catherine or St. Andrew. These islands offer a tranquil escape from the bustling town, with secluded beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush greenery. Swim in hidden coves, bask in the sun on pristine shores, or explore the island’s trails and discover hidden treasures. (Describe your island hopping experience, highlighting the beauty of the islands and any activities you enjoyed. Did you have a favourite island or a memorable moment during your excursion?)
