Discover Why Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean Should Be Your Next Quebec Getaway

saguenay-lac-saint-jean

Ready to explore a slice of Quebec that’s as charming as it is unique? If so, you’re in luck.

Welcome to Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, a place where the landscape is stunning and the local cuisine is unapologetically centered around one delicious little fruit: the blueberry. In fact, the area’s connection to the blueberry is so strong that people from this region are known as Les Bluets (I assume that translates as blueberry people, which I think makes a whole lot of sense).

They are also extremely well-known for their cheese, which is equally delicious and often used in everything.

Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a foodie, or simply looking for an opportunity to enjoy an authentic Quebecois experience, this guide is designed to help you make the most of your visit.

How to Get to Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean

For those of us in the Greater Toronto Area, a trip to the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region is a true getaway. Too far away for a simple road trip from Toronto, the distance warrants a weekend or longer in this beautiful destination. Here are your options for making the journey, from a classic (but long) road trip to a quicker (and scenic) flight.

By Car

For those who enjoy an epic road trip, the drive from Toronto to Saguenay is a scenic one. Depending on traffic and your destination within the region, the drive can take anywhere from 10 to 12 hours. The route will generally take you through Montreal and Trois-Rivieres. However, if you want to visit Quebec City, your trip can easily accommodate that, too! Not only are these great places to explore, but incorporating other stops is also an excellent way to break up the drive.

By Air

For a faster and more direct trip, flying may be your ideal option. While there are no direct flights from Toronto to the Saguenay-Bagotville Airport, Air Canada and other airlines offer one-stop flights with a layover in Montreal or Quebec City. While the flight itself is relatively short (approximately 2-3 hours), with the layover, your total travel time will usually be around 4-6 hours. Ticket prices can vary significantly depending on the time of year and how far in advance you book, but they start at approximately $375 one-way.

By Bus & Train

If you want to enjoy the scenery of a road trip without the stress of driving, there are public transport options available. There are both bus and train routes available, but they will involve transfers and combining multiple options. For example, you can take a bus with Megabus from Toronto to Montreal, with tickets starting at $50 one-way. In Montreal, transfer to ViaRail for a trip to the station in Jonquière, a city in Saguenay. Tickets for this leg start at $69. However, these trips aren’t short, with the full journey estimated to take 12-14 hours depending on the time you wait between transfers.

Where to Stay in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean

This is a relatively large area of the province, meaning there are many different cities and towns with accommodations to choose from. I recommend mapping out the attractions you want to explore and using that to guide where you should stay to limit unnecessary travel time.

However, if you are planning to follow my itinerary below, here are the amazing places I stayed along the way:

If you are looking for a more traditional hotel experience, Hôtel Chicoutimi may be more your style. Foodies, this is a must-see hotel in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean during your stay. Why? There are four separate options to grab a bite to eat on-site: Inter, Rouge Burger Bar, The Gallery, and the grab-and-go selections at Prêt à Manger & More. While I didn’t have a chance to try all of these spots during my stay, I was definitely more than tempted (especially when I picked up the smell of something mouthwatering while walking through the hotel hallways).

Day 1 (Friday Afternoon)

Lunch at Microbrasserie Bercée

150 Route d’Hébertville, Hébertville

After arriving at the airport, we start our visit with a bite to eat and a cold beer at Microbrasserie Bercée. This cozy brewhouse felt welcoming, thanks to its cabin-like aesthetic and friendly staff. Our host, Roxanne, was spot-on with her food recommendations! Our pizza was fresh and delicious, made with local cheese. Paired with one of their craft beers, it was the perfect introduction to the local culinary scene.

Are you a nature lover? If so, you’ll be happy to learn that Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean is home to some of Quebec’s most beautiful views and landscapes, many of which can be found in Parc le Trou de la Fée. The raw power of the Métabetchouane River and its waterfalls once supplied a hydroelectric power station, the remains of which are still visible. Dinner at Restaurant du Moulin inside the Historical Village of Val-Jalbert

Rue Saint-George, Chambord

If your idea of the perfect vacation combines mouthwatering food and the chance to experience local history, you’re in luck. The Historical Village of Val-Jalbert will take you back in time to the 1920s, when pulp mills were at their peak. This open-air museum allows you to ride a trolley and check out wooden period houses, the convent-school, the post office, and the general store.

Of course, one of the most memorable sights is that of the absolutely stunning Ouiatchouan Falls. This powerful waterfall once powered the mill. Today, inside the old mill, you’ll find Restaurant du Moulin. The rustic charm and modern touches blend seamlessly to create a one-of-a-kind dining experience.

Our dinner featured some of the best food I have ever tasted, no lie! The soup was incredible, but the most mind-blowing part came with our main course. After I finished eating my steak, Gordy asked me if something was wrong because I had become so quiet. The truth was that I was just having a moment with my steak because it was that good. All I can say is, wow!

Breakfast at Le Raf-inné

2190 Rue Ouiatchouan, Mashteuiatsh

If you are staying at Camping Plage Robertson, as I did, you have a great breakfast spot on-site to start your day the right way. Not only is the home-cooked food delicious, but Le Raf-inné also offers a beautiful view with its location on the shores of Lac Saint-Jean. Don’t let the fact that this restaurant is located in a campground fool you. It’s well worth a visit.

Visit Musée Ilnu de Mashteuiatsh

1787 rue Amishk, Mashteuiatsh

One of my favourite Sanguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean activities when it comes to learning about the region’s history and culture was our visit to the Musée Ilnu de Mashteuiatsh. Here, I was introduced to the Pekuakamiulnuatsh culture, the only Aboriginal community in the region.

In addition to the more traditional museum exhibits, there is also the outdoor site Nuhtshimitsh – In the Forest, and the greenhouse school, each offering an interactive opportunity to learn and connect with Indigenous history and knowledge. Our guide, Louis-Philip, was incredibly knowledgeable and such a pleasure to hang out with during our visit.

Grab Lunch at Casse-croute Chez Perron

598 Principale Street, Saint-Prime

Of course, few meals instantly make me think of Quebec the way I do when I see poutine. No Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean itinerary would be complete without finding a place to indulge in this delicious tradition. Luckily for me, Casse-croute Chez Perron was the perfect spot. Their poutines are made using fresh cheese curds from Fromagerie Perron. The result is incredible!

Enjoy a Taste of the Region at La Maison du Bleuet

557 Route 169, Saint-Félicien

As I mentioned in the introduction to this travel guide, the people of Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean are known as “Little Bluets,” a nod to the region’s signature flavour: the blueberry. A visit to La Maison du Bleuet will show you blueberries in a new light. Here, everything is either made with, infused with, or contains blueberries in some form.

restaurants in saguenay-lac-saint-jean

While we were there, I tried a ton of blueberry-focused products, including iced tea, chocolate, BBQ sauce, salad dressing, and more. My favourite? Blueberry ice cream! I don’t know why we don’t see this fruity treat on all ice cream menus. Maybe I’m on to something?

Tap into Your Wild Side at Zoo Sauvage de St-Félicien

2230, boulevard du Jardin, Saint-Félicien

Here’s a great option if you’re searching for family-friendly activities in Sanguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean (or even if you’re travelling solo, honestly). Zoo Sauvage de St-Félicien offers so many fun and unique ways to get up close and personal with the animal kingdom.

The pedestrian section allows you to enjoy the traditional zoo experience. Here, visitors can walk through seven different, distinct sections of the zoo: Arctic Tundra, Eastern Asia, Laurentian Forest, Mongolia, Rocky Mountains, Ethiopian Plateaus, and the Kids’ Farm. Each zone introduces a new habitat and the species that call it home. You can even view scheduled feeding times for several of the animals, such as the Canadian lynxes, Amur tigers, polar bears, River otters, and wolverines.

However, during my visit, we tried something a little different – the Natural Trail Park. This is the activity that made Zoo Sauvage so popular! We took a train ride through the property, moving right through where the animals roam freely in their habitats. Each of the train cars is built with cages instead of solid walls on the upper half, letting you get up close and personal. It was an incredible experience I’ll never forget.

Dinner at Auberge de l’ile du Repos

105 Chemin de l’Île du Repos, Péribonka

While I previously mentioned the beautiful “Island of Rest” and the accommodations it offers, another great reason to visit the island is to check out the bistro-style restaurant located there. Chef and master pâtissier Tom Delage completely revised the menu in 2025, which now features many different options, including burgers, pasta dishes, and beef bourguignon.

While there is an indoor dining area, I highly recommend taking a seat out in the covered outdoor terrace, where you can enjoy your meal with a view of the Péribonka River.

Day 3 (Sunday)

Explore Pointe-Taillon National Park

3e Rang, Alma

My third day exploring the region began with a trip to the beautiful and peaceful Pointe-Taillon National Park. Located right on the shores of the area’s massive lake, the park is known as offering some of the best beaches and swimming spots in Lac-Saint-Jean. If you’re looking to spend a day soaking up the sun or watching your kids build sandcastles, this is the place.

In addition to the beautiful sandy beaches, the park also has a network of trails you can explore either on foot or by bike. We rented bikes to explore, which is a choice I highly recommend. The trails are flat and easy to navigate, making them ideal for a casual, leisurely ride while taking in the beautiful views at every turn. This is also a great spot for those interested in taking to the water by kayak, canoe, pedal boat, or stand-up paddleboard.

Lunch at Le Saint-Crème

1657 Avenue du Pont Nord, Alma

We stopped at one of the most unique restaurants in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean. Le Saint-Crème, owned by Vincent Lavoie, is a hotel, restaurant, and creamery located inside a former church. I never pictured myself enjoying my lunch while sitting on a church pew, surrounded by colourful stained glass.

Check Out the Odyssée des Bâtisseurs (Odyssey of the Builders)

1671 avenue du Pont Nord, Alma

Another opportunity to learn about the fascinating history of the Lac-Saint-Jean region, the Odyssée des Bâtisseurs offers a great experience for visitors of all ages. Indoor and outdoor exhibits offer hands-on and interactive learning, focusing on topics like the agricultural roots of the area, artists from the region over the years, and even the history of beer in Quebec (that was a temporary exhibit that is no longer available, but I still love that they had it at one time).

The outdoor exhibits are all connected by well-maintained trails, including a footbridge that extends over Avenue du Pont Nord. I highly recommend climbing to the top of the water tower for a stunning view of the property and the surrounding landscape.

After a quick breakfast at our hotel, we made our way to the Fjord Museum. The exhibits here share information about the marine life of Saguenay Fjord, while the 53,000-liter saltwater aquarium allows you to view these incredible creatures up close and personal. A touch tank featuring starfish, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, and other marine species provides a fun experience for visitors of all ages.

Art lovers, you don’t want to miss this one! Touverre was founded by Giuseppe Benedetto in 1993. Here, he shares his love for and incredible skill in the art of glassworks. One thing that stands out about his work is the mixed use of glass, steel, granite, aluminum, and bronze in his pieces.

During our visit, he took us around his gallery and studio to show us his amazing creations. He’s also the owner of the restaurant, Le Pétrin (more on that next). He sat down with us and discussed his past and his artistic journey in Italy and Europe. It was really interesting to hear about how his work was inspired by the region. He also discussed his glassmaking technique, which helped us better understand and appreciate his works.

Lunch at Le Pétrin

3291 boul de la, Bd de la Grande-Baie S, La Baie

Speaking of Le Pétrin, after our visit to Touverre, Giuseppe prepared a delicious lunch for us. They are well known for their tasty, fresh-baked bagels and bread, the foundation for incredible sandwiches and other menu items. While Giuseppe welcomed us into his space, it was clear that the warm, welcoming atmosphere would make any visitor feel completely at home. Do you need a little “pick me up” before continuing to work your way through your list of Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean activities? Try one of their specialty coffees.

Take a Cruise Aboard La Marjolaine

Another great way to celebrate the beauty of the area is to take an afternoon cruise on La Marjolaine. Not only does this give you a truly magical opportunity to take in the views, but the guided tour also introduced us to so much of the region’s history. That said, the fjords were breathtaking and well worth the experience all on their own!

Dinner at Pavillon Noir

756 Rue des Croisières, Saguenay

To conclude our 4th day in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, we visited Pavillon Noir, a restaurant and microbrewery, for dinner. The restaurant is pirate-themed, not to the point of being cheesy. Instead, it creates a fun atmosphere that perfectly complements its waterfront location. Of course, sticking with the theme, we opted for the fish and chips. They were delicious, but I expected nothing less! Beer lovers can choose from their selection of craft beers, including non-alcoholic options for those who prefer them.

Grab Lunch to Go at Chez Roger

While most of the restaurants I focus on in my travel guides are spots to sit down and take in a plated meal, sometimes you don’t have time to pull up a chair. If you’re looking for a way to fuel yourself on the go without sacrificing flavour, Chez Roger is a great option. This bakery not only offers a great selection of delicious baked goods, but you can also grab a tasty meal with fresh-baked bread, pizza, and more.

Explore Parc Aventures Cap-Jaeux

260, Pointe-aux-Pins Road, Saint-Fulgence

For the final day of my Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean itinerary, I recommend taking another opportunity to explore the region’s natural beauty. Parc Aventures Cap-Jaeux is a favourite spot for nature lovers in the area, and for good reason. Here you can enjoy a dozen kilometers of hiking trails, a beach, kayaking, fishing, sea shuttles, a via ferrata, an aerial ropes course, and more. There is even a spa experience allowing you to enjoy a massage on the beach.

I had never experienced a via ferrata before, but I can’t recommend the experience enough. The views were almost unbelievable. That said, it did have me using muscles I didn’t know existed, and my thighs were feeling the burn for a few days afterwards. So, be prepared for the fact that it is physically demanding.

The most iconic local flavour is the blueberry, earning the locals the nickname “Les Bluets.” You can find it in everything from fresh pies and ice cream to savory BBQ sauces.
